NBA playoff basketball is upon us, and by the results of the games yesterday, you would have thought we stepped back to 1994. You had an Orlando Magic team led by dominating center Dwight Howard, Dallas' Jason Kidd scoring points like he did before his wife beating days, and a Chicago Bulls team with a predicted MVP and fan favorite in Derrick Rose. From a betting standpoint, teamwork trumped individual play as the Magic and Bulls failed to cover whereas the Mavericks and Heat put money in the pockets of their backers. To win in the playoffs, their is a simple formula. Defense + a clutch bench guy = championship. With that formula in mind, the team I am focusing on today is the new look Denver Nuggets. A team that has played better since the departure of Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks. Take team defense, add a dash of youth, fold in the bench play of Al Harrington, stir in the veteran coaching skills of George Karl and cook for 25 games, and you have a savory recipe for success.
Denver has become a defense focused team A.C. (after Carmelo). Covering the UNDER 16 out of the last 25 games going 16-7-2, Denver has learned that basketball is played without the ball as much as it is played with it., On the flip side of this match up it would be easy to look at the Oklahoma City Thunder team and expect a lot of points scored in today's game. Durant & Westbrook are offensive juggernauts. Look at that team more closely however, and you will see a team that has covered the UNDER 12 out of the last 19 games. these teams have played each other twice since the trade and have scored a total of 193 and 195 points respectively. If those scores are any indication and today's total at 200, we should expect the UNDER to hit. My play for the day: Denver/Oklahoma City UNDER 200
